ZusammenfassungAnhand von Alexander Mitscherlichs Plädoyers für eine Psychosomatische Medizin werden dessen epistemologische Neupositionierungen in den 1940er, 1950er und 1960er Jahren untersucht. Sie eröffnen den Blick auf die Auseinandersetzung von Psychiatern, Internisten und Psychotherapeuten um valides und handlungsrelevantes Wissen in der Nachkriegszeit. Zentral war für Mitscherlich ein Krankheitsverständnis, das der Subjektivität der Patienten einen festen Platz zuwies. Damit verbunden war eine kontinuierliche Kritik an statistischen Verfahren zur Validierung von Einzelbefunden und Hypothesen. Gezeigt wird, wie anpassungsfähig Mitscherlich mit seiner (...) Kritik an einer naturwissenschaftlich orientierten Methodik in der Medizin war, wenngleich er die ursprüngliche Stoßrichtung trotz aller Wandlungen aufrechterhielt. (shrink)

Unter den griechischen exegetischen Werken zu den Schriften des Aristoteles kommt dem von um 200 n. Chr. wirkenden Alexander von Aphrodisias (Bücher 1-5) und einem byzantinischen Gelehrten des 13. Jahrhunderts, bekannt als Pseudo-Alexander, (Bücher 6--?14) stammenden Kommentar zur Metaphysik des Aristoteles eine überragende Bedeutung zu. Der Wert des durch fundierte Kenntnisse der Philosophie des Aristoteles ausgezeichneten Kommentars ist sowohl für die denkerische Durchdringung der aristotelischen Metaphysik als auch für die Geschichte der griechischen Philosophie nicht genug hochzuschätzen. Den Denkern (...) des Mittelalters lag der Text aber nicht vor. Erst im Jahre 1527 machte der berühmte spanische Humanist Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda (1490?-1573) der breiten Öffentlichkeit den Kommentar zur Metaphysik erst zugänglich. Seine immer noch geschätzte, in gewissem Sinne auch unentbehrliche Übersetzung des Kommentars zu den ersten zwölf Büchern erstellte er aufgrund der Kollationierung der ihm zu Gebote stehenden Handschriften mit philologischer Gewissenhaftigkeit und ermöglichte auf diese Weise die immer noch nicht erforschte Rezeption des Textes in den folgenden drei Jahrhunderten bis zur ersten Edition des vollständigen griechischen Originals durch Hermann Bonitz 1847. Ein Nachdruck der 'editio princeps' dieser lateinischen Übersetzung, die 1561 zum fünften und letzten Mal erschienen ist, ist nicht nur ein Akt der antiquarischen Pietät, sondern kommt gerade im digitalen Zeitalter einer Forderung der Forschung nach. ZusammenfassungDer Internistenkongress von 1949 war Anlass und Arena einer breit wahrgenommenen Kontroverse zu epistemologischen Fragen der Psychosomatischen Medizin. Der Beitrag verortet zunächst den Kongress in der Nachkriegsgeschichte und zeichnet die Verlaufslinien der Debatte nach. Dabei werden sowohl die Positionen der Sprecher der Psychosomatischen Medizin – Viktor von Weizsäcker und Alexander Mitscherlich – als auch diejenige von Paul Martini, der auf Basis seiner Methodologie klinischer Forschung grundsätzliche Kritik äußerte, rekonstruiert. In einem zweiten Schritt werden die jeweils unterschiedlichen Auffassungen von (...) Kausalität, Evidenz und Subjektivität herausgearbeitet und kontextualisiert. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt hierbei auf dem konkreten und expliziten Gebrauch dieser Begriffe bei Martini. Schließlich zeige ich, dass diese Ereignisse im Jahr 1949 als Kulmination einer fortdauernden Kontroverse über wissenschaftliche Evidenz in der klinischen Medizin gelesen werden können, die sich mit ihren Beteiligten und Bezugsebenen über mehrere Jahrzehnte erstreckte. Critic, poet and philosopher Friedrich von Schlegel (1772–1829) was a leading figure of German Romanticism. In the two years before his untimely death, he wrote three cycles of lectures intended as part of a larger project to lay the foundations of a new general philosophy. Two of these cycles, 'Philosophie des Lebens' (given in 1827, published 1828) and 'Philosophie des Sprache und des Wortes' (given in December 1828 and published posthumously), are reissued here in an 1847 English translation. The first (...) presents Schlegel's understanding of philosophy as independent of theology or politics, concerned with the 'inner spiritual life' of humankind. The second explores the nature of communication through language and art. Schlegel argues that full human consciousness cannot be restored by Enlightenment science, but only by divine revelation and redemption. Precarious Matters. The Radium Economy, Episteme of Risk and the Emergence of Tracer Technique in National SocialismFollowing the traces of radioactive material is – as scholars have recently shown – a valuable historical approach in order to evaluate the material ’factor’ of science in action. Even though the origins of materials like radium and artificial isotopes are quite different, their circulation is interconnected. A material pathway can be drawn from the radium industry to the scientific rise of artificial isotopes as (...) indicator substances in the 1930s, continuing to the building of networks by German scientists working for the war efforts. Also, this pathway reveals the role of radiation protection in establishing that material culture. Finally, the dynamics of material traces and institutional linkages is shown by the tracer work of biophysicists and radiation biologists working at the Genetic Department of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Brain Research in Berlin and at the Institut de Chimie Nucléaire at Paris, which at that time was occupied by German troops. English summary: Karl Jaspers criticism on psychoanalysis forms the central point of the prize-winning treatise honoured by the University of Zurich. It conveys his arguments against Freuds thinking with regard to the history of ideas both within the context of Psychiatry around 1900 and the cultural criticism based on existential philosophy around 1930. From a sociological aspect, their interpretation draws upon Max Webers theory of modern times. By means of sources so far unpublished, the author looks into the matter of (...) how Jaspers reacted on the decline and the revival of psychoanalysis before and after 1945. Especially the fierce controversy with Alexander Mitscherlich which continued well into the 1960s is an important part of the history of psychoanalysis and, from the point of view of contemporary history, belongs to the intellectual foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany. Not to neglect and of special interest to medical ethics is the implicit discourse on the limits of the physicians authority. This discourse also refers to the leading question of the possibilities of an individual lifestyle in modern times. German description: Lebensfuhrung in der Moderne wird in der zweiten Auflage um ein ausfuhrliches Nachwort von Matthias Bormuth erweitert, in dem er seine Uberlegungen im Blick auf die kantische Anthropologie erganzt und sich im Horizont eines kulturwissenschaftlichen Skeptizismus mit seinen Kritikern auseinandersetzt. Die Psychoanalysekritik von Karl Jaspers (1883-1969) steht im Mittelpunkt dieser von den Universitaten Zurich und Tubingen preisgekronten Studie. Jaspers' Argumente wider Freuds Denken werden sowohl in medizintheoretischer als auch in existenzphilosophischer Hinsicht untersucht, wobei Max Webers Theorie der Moderne als Leitfaden der Interpretation dient. Bislang unveroffentlichte Quellen legen frei, wie Karl Jaspers auf Untergang und Wiederaufstieg der Psychoanalyse vor und nach 1945 reagierte. Dabei erweist sich seine scharfe Kontroverse mit Alexander Mitscherlich und Viktor von Weizsacker als entscheidend fur die Geschichte der Psychoanalyse in der Bundesrepublik. Medizinethisch aufschlussreich ist die in diesem Rahmen gefuhrte Diskussion uber die Grenzen arztlicher Autoritat in der Psychotherapie. The first part of the studies contains a fundamental work on "Helmuth Plessner. Philosoph und Soziologe-Wissenschaft als Beruf in der Endzeit des bürgerlichen Humanismus", on which Christian von Ferber wrote until old age and whose discussion is still pending. In the second part of the studies, von Ferber describes his career in the post-war period under the influence and in the circles of Helmuth Plessner and other teachers, up to becoming a professor of sociology. He followed three orientations: Science is (...) more than the acquisition of methodological and theoretical competence. Scepticism is appropriate towards statements that cannot relate to primary reality, and science is related to the values of human life. Funda-mental reflections on the freedom-securing character of sociology and on central questions of health policy and social medicine illuminate Christian von Ferber's life's work and the topicality of his questions. Die Einwände, die sich hinsichtlich der Weltprobleme gegen die Philosophie richten, sind vor allem, dass sie in ihrer Ausrichtung auf die eigenen Themen die Gegenwartsprobleme nicht zur Kenntnis nimmt, oder dass ihre Begrifflichkeit zu abstrakt ist, um der Komplexität der Wirklichkeit zu genügen. Aus diesen Gründen wird von der Philosophie ein Realitätsbezug und der Kontakt mit der Gegenwart gefordert, um zur Lösung der Weltprobleme beizutragen. Im Unterschied zu diesen Einwänden behandelt der Beitrag die Frage, ob die Philosophie selbst als ein (...) Weltproblem beurteilt werden kann. Hierfür scheinen drei Grundannahmen erforderlich zu sein: 1. der "Motor" der gegenwärtigen Globalisierungsprozesse ist die westliche Kultur, die sowohl auf den modernen Naturwissenschaften als auch auf der Idee der Menschenrechte gegründet ist. Sie erzeugt zum einen durch ihre Dynamik Probleme als Weltprobleme und definiert zum anderen, was als Weltproblem zu betrachten ist. - 2. Die Philosophie ist das geistige Fundament und der ideelle Ausdruck der westlichen Kultur. Versteht man unter "Philosophie" die institutionalisierte Praxis des Reflektierens und Begründens, die ihren Maßstab an der Rationalität hat, so ist sie hinsichtlich ihrer Genese und ihrer Geltung untrennbar mit der westlichen Kultur verbunden. - 3. Die Praxis der Philosophie, ihre Standards auf Prinzipien der Rationalität zu gründen, stimmt nicht mit den Bedingungen und Strukturen des irdischen Lebens überein. Diese Annahme widerspricht sowohl einer idealistischen Ontologie, die die natürlichen Vorgänge in rationalen Strukturen gegründet sieht, als auch einer materialistischen, die Begriffe und Theorien als Abbilder natürlicher Strukturen interpretiert. Unter diesen drei Bedingungen ist die Philosophie nicht nur mit den Weltproblemen konfrontiert, sondern muss selbst als ein Weltproblem angesehen werden. (shrink)

It extended the uses and gratifications paradigm within the framework of social cognitive theory by instituting new operational measures of gratifications sought, reconstructed as outcome expectations. Although the model of media attendance offers some promising steps forward in measuring media selectivity and usage, and to some extent is applicable to another context of media use, the relative importance of outcome expectancies in explaining media usage and selectivity (...) is not fully supported. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) – either as “standard” GIS or custom made Historical GIS (HGIS) – have become quite popular in some historical sub-disciplines, such as Economic and Social History or Historical Geography. “Mainstream” history, however, seems to be rather unaffected by this trend. More generally speaking: Why is it that computer applications in general have failed to make much headway in history departments, despite the first steps being undertaken a good forty years ago? With the “spatial turn” in full (...) swing in the humanities, and many historians dealing with spatial and geographical questions, one would think GIS would be welcomed with open arms. Yet there seems to be no general anticipation by historians of employing GIS as a research tool. As mentioned, HGIS are popular chiefly among Historical Geographers and Social and Economic Historians. The latter disciplines seem to be predestined to use such software through the widespread quantitative methodology these disciplines have employed traditionally. Other historical sub-disciplines, such as Ancient History, are also very open to this emerging technology since the scarcity of written sources in this field can be mitigated by inferences made from an HGIS that has archaeological data stored in it, for example. In most of Modern History, however, the use of GIS is rarely seen. The intellectual benefit that a GIS may bring about seems not be apparent to scholars from this sub-discipline (and others). This book wants to investigate and discuss this controversy. Why does the wider historian community not embrace GIS more readily? While one cannot deny that the methodologies linked with a GIS follow geographical paradigms rather than historical ones, the potential of GIS as a 'killer application' for digital historical scholarship should be obvious. This book brings together authors from Geography and History to discuss the value of GIS for historical research. The focus, however, will not be on the "how", but on the "why" of GIS in history. ArgumentThis paper brings together the history of risk and the history of DNA repair, a biological phenomenon that emerged as a research field in between molecular biology, genetics, and radiation research in the 1960s. The case of xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), an inherited hypersensitivity to UV light and, hence, a disposition to skin cancer will be the starting point to argue that, in the 1970s and 1980s, DNA repair became entangled in the creation of new models of the human body at (...) risk – what is here conceptually referred to as the vulnerability aspect of body history – and new attempts at cancer prevention and enhancement of the body associated with the new flourishing research areas of antimutagenesis and anticarcinogenesis. The aim will be to demonstrate that DNA repair created special attempts at disease prevention: molecular enhancement, seeking to identify means to increase the self-repair abilities of the body at the molecular level. Prevention in this sense meant enhancing the body's ability to cope with the environmental hazards of an already toxic world. This strategy has recently been adopted by the beauty industry, which introduced DNA care as a new target for skin care research and anti-aging formulas. (shrink)

The article introduces the pedagogical background and impact of Grue-Sørensen. Knud Grue-Sørensen came to educational science from philosophy and was infl uenced by Kantian philosopher Leonard Nelson. Grue-Sørensen became the first professor of education at the University of Copenhagen. During an era in which research in the fi eld of education became more and more infl uenced by empirical research, Grue- Sørensen held on to a theoretically and historically rooted pedagogy. Among other works he authored a threevolume account of the (...) history of education and the encyclopaedia “Almen Pædagogik”. (shrink)

This contribution draws attention to the circulation of materialities and persons as a central feature in the constitution of experimental cultures. The protein and ribosome research at the Max Planck Society (MPG)—with a main focus on the research conducted by Brigitte Wittmann‐Liebold at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics—serves as an example to highlight some of the central conditions that determined the material circulation in molecular biology: the very organizational framework of gender and economics. In doing so, this contribution (...) argues for a historical narrative that stresses the conditions facilitating the circulation of technologies, materials, and personnel. Histories of this kind contribute to an integrated view of the scientific, technological, social, political, economic, and cultural specificities of experimental cultures. (shrink)
